Sustainability

Looking after the land.

A clean dance floor is a happy dance floor!

While we may enjoy letting loose, we do not enjoy getting messy. Planet Earth is our home and here at Hopkins Creek we treat it as such.

Working closely with resource recovery experts Be.Alternative, we have more initiatives in place than ever before. We ask that you take the time to carefully absorb this information, support the concepts, and familiarise yourself with the expectations when camping on the land.

Creating environmentally sustainable events is of the highest importance to both Hopkins Creek and B-Alternative but the question is what does this look like to us? Having an epic time with mates, but keeping the health of the environment in mind so we can all Party With the Planet, Not Against It! You will meet the friendly B-Alternative staff throughout the event, as they cruise around your campsites to ensure everything is running smooth for you and vibes are high. They are there to ensure your tents and marquees are set up correctly so they don’t become single-use items.

The information below outlines a number of our sustainability initiatives for the event, please read them all carefully as to avoid any confusion or hold up entering the event!

REUSABLE CROCKERY SYSTEM +

At Hopkins Creek this year we are striving to have as little landfill waste as possible. We believe we can reach this goal by creating an entirely reusable event. This will see the vendors have reusable crockery and cutlery instead of single use packaging. To make this successful, we are asking all of you to support this system. This initiative helps us reduce our vendor related event waste by 90-95% and the hire cost goes towards Be.Alternatives post event tree planting program!

How will the system work?

Attendees can purchase a reusable kit for $10 from the Be.Alternative wash station at the event, on purchase you will receive 2 coloured wristbands: One for food and one for coffee. Keep these on you, they easily sit on your wrists, and bring them up to the food or coffee truck of your choice when you are making your purchase.

When you pay for your meal or coffee, hand over one wristband and you will receive your food and drink in an awesome, reusable rice husk bowl or cup. Once finished, return your dirty dishes to the wash station and you will then receive a wristband to repeat the process.

Please remember to return the kits, as if you don’t you won’t be able to purchase food or drinks again without your tickets. If you don’t have the wristbands on you or lose them, you will need to purchase them again at the B-Alternative tent $10. We understand that the kits are extremely nice, but we need them back for future years, so please bring them back on the last day if you forget to bring them back before then. For every wristband you return on the last day, you will receive a $5 refund from your original $10. The non refunded $5 goes towards Be.Alternatives post event tree planting project.

PLASTIC BOTTLE BAN +

As always there is a complete ban on plastic water bottles at the event. Hopkins Creek water bottles are available at the general store for those who forgot to bring their own.

COMPOSTABLE TOILETS +

You asked, we listened! We are super excited to be partnering with Natural Event to be bringing fully compostable toilet systems to the event for 2021. By using a non flushing compostable system we will be saving around 30,000 litres of water over the weekend as well as reducing our use of toilet related chemicals completely.

GOOD IN-TENT-IONS +

Good Intentions Camping is a small business helping punters party sustainably. They collect camping gear that gets left behind, and clean or refurbish it to be rented out at future festivals.

NO SINGLE USE PLASTIC, BRING YOUR REUSABLE BOTTLE AND BE REWARDED! +

As always there is a complete ban on plastic water bottles at the event. Hopkins Creek water bottles are available at the general store for those who forgot to bring their own.

CLEAN CAMPSITE COMPETITION +

Five double passes to our next event will be awarded to the five cleanest campsites across the weekend, as judged by our environmental team. Get your house in order!

USE THE BUS OR CARPOOL AND SAVE! +

For 2021 we are really trying to minimise the amount of cars on our roads via the use of our bus service and car passes. $20 might seem a bit steep for a car pass but if you get four people in your car it’s a measly $5 each and 100% of the profits will go towards our environmental initiatives. If you arrive at the festival without a valid car pass be prepared to be charged $30 when you arrive, grab one now!

Don’t have a car? Grab a bus ticket and get picked up and dropped off, easy as that.

MULTI STREAM WASTE SYSTEM +

To reduce the amount of general waste on site Be.Alternative will be using multi stream waste systems across the event area. Please follow the directions of the waste volunteers and place all of your waste into the correct streams when sorting.

E-WASTE BINS +

In a waste sense, vapes are the new nangs. Please if using a disposable vape over the weekend visit the information tent to dispose of it correctly in our E-Waste bins. Do not leave these on the ground or in general waste.

ON SITE COMPOSTING +

We will be composting all food waste from Hopkins Creek 2021 right on site inside the Crater, all food scraps will be composted, to go back onto farms and gardens in the local area! A big thank you needs to go to our resident legends Jenny and Dave for getting behind the cause.

RENT A CUP SYSTEM +

Grab a Hopkins Creek reusable cup from Barry’s Bait Shop for $2 and hold onto it for the weekend! This helps us eliminate a huge amount of waste from the bar over the weekend.

NANG BAN +

We cannot emphasise this one enough, Nitrous Oxide canisters are not welcome at Hopkins Creek. If you are found using NOS at the event or trying to smuggle it in at the gate your wristbands will be cut and you will be asked to leave the event, the damage these canisters are doing to the environment is immense, don’t bring them!

We hope everything Hopkins Creek is aiming to achieve this year will resonate with you all, and this year’s event will be the best, and most environmentally friendly to date!
